A Different Kind of Easter Egg!

I meant to post this in time for Easter but I just ran out of time.

My Mom, who is now 86, grew up in Yugoslavia. There was no such thing as an Easter egg coloring kit so they had to be creative.  Now I really don't know where this method of coloring eggs originated but this is how my Mom and her family did it.

When you boil the eggs, add onion peels to the water, the deepest, brownest ones you can find. I usually begin saving my peels about one month  before Easter. Boil for the normal amount of  time and what you will have when they are done is a beautiful egg with a deep golden brown color. I occasionally move the peels around the eggs to prevent streaking and I also make sure I use a sauce pan that is large enough for the peels to float freely around theonion eggs.

Once the eggs are completely cool, you are ready to "paint". Your paint is a small container of bleach. I use a toothpick or shishkabob stick depending on what I want to paint. I have no artistic talent whatsoever but my husband is quite talented in that department.

Below are some of  the eggs we did this year and some from the past. We are saving out favorites to give to our daughter when she is on her own. Over time the egg white dries up but the yolk stays intact and you can hear it rolling around inside. My Mom has one that her sister made in 1956 and my oldest one dates back to 1988. It is truly a treasure for our family.

For those of you to whom drawing comes naturally, I can imagine some beautiful creations....possibly even a house drawn on the egg. It may make a nice gift for a client, particularly if you give them a nice assortment.
And did I mention that it's about as inexpensive as a project can be?

Note: If your kids try these you may want to give them plastic gloves to wear and make sure you cover your work area well. I usually use lots of newspaper.
